There are 9 Schools of
study at APU, each led by a Dean. Schools may be further sub-divided into departments or
divisions.
Overall
university management is effected via the Office of the
Vice Chancellor and support for academic and professional activities via Central Professional Services.

Department of
Life Sciences

We are a large,
dynamic Department within the School of Applied Sciences, with a full-time staff of
twenty. Degrees have been offered by the Department since 1957, with continuing innovation
in degree provision. In recent years we have introduced new undergraduate degrees in
Animal Behaviour, Ecology and Conservation, Sports Science (delivered in association with
APU Regional Colleges) and Natural History as well as a very successful Internet-based
postgraduate MSc in Biomedical Sciences. Alongside teaching, staff in the Department
undertake research in a wide range of areas, for example DNA profiling of bird
populations, behavioural studies on baboons in Tanzania, entomological studies on Fenland
restoration projects, behavioural studies on insect natural enemies and mechanisms of
multiple sclerosis.
The Department
is located in Cambridge, a city with major strengths in academic, research and industrial
activities related to Life Sciences. Students on our degrees are taught in good quality
and well equipped laboratories by a group of highly qualified and enthusiastic staff who
have a strong commitment to student care. The Applied Science Resource Centre, with a
suite of 80 personal computers, is located in the same building as the Life Sciences
Department.
Environmental Sciences
Research Centre
The Environmental Sciences Research Centre represents a
multi-disciplinary research group within the School of Applied Sciences of Anglia
Polytechnic University, and is one of five Designated Research and Development Centres
within the University. It comprises staff with research interests in environmental
sciences from the Departments of Life Sciences and Forensic Science and Chemistry, and
developed from a strong tradition of academic research, education, training and
consultancy. We have well established collaborations with other university departments and
research institutes in both the UK and overseas.
The multidisciplinary nature of the Research Centre means that we can
integrate the techniques of the physical and life sciences in environmental projects. Our
interests are both worldwide (e.g. animal behaviour and ecology in Tanzania, and the
effects of environmental change on trees in the northern hemisphere and plants in
Antarctica) and local (e.g. waste management, and monitoring the effects of habitat and
environmental change on birds and insects in East Anglia). We see the development of local
projects in collaboration with local companies and other bodies as a key part of our
activities.
Research Topics include:
Animal Behaviour
Dating Methods
Environmental Chemistry
Climate Change
Ecology and Conservation
