Amaras Wild Bird and Animal Rehabilitation Center was started by a local non-governmental organization with funding from the United States Humane Society. The Pico Bonito National Park Foundation now manages Amaras with funding coming from a wide variety of sources including tourism, the Angelica Foundation, and private donations. The primary focus of Amaras is to rehabilitate and release wild caught birds and animals that have been confiscated from the illegal wild animal pet trade. A secondary role of the Center is environmental education with a focus on local rural schools and the importance of Honduras' protected areas and wildlife.
A visit to Amaras will allow you learn about the illegal pet trade, the rehabilitation process, and see many species of birds and mammals in the process of rehabilitation. The trip to Amaras can be made on foot or on mountain bikes and takes you through a wide variety of tropical agricultural systems including black pepper, passion fruit, citrus, African palm, and over a dozen species of tropical hardwoods. The hardwood plantations are part of an innovative effort to explore reforestation options and create seed banks for endangered native hardwood tree species.
