| This WILDPro module contains comprehensive information on the ducks, geese
and swans of the world. The page on each species starts with pictures to aid identification and follows with a detailed description, natural history and conservation information and species-specific aviculture information. … and follows with alternative names, species-specific captive management information and detailed information on the external appearance, reproduction, behaviour, natural diet, range, habitat and conservation of each species. In the Diseases section nearly 300 diseases recorded in waterfowl are described, including clinical signs, pathological findings, diagnosis, treatment etc. The Agents which cause these diseases, including the physical factors as well as viruses, bacteria etc., have their own pages, available directly (from the "Waterfowl Agents" and the "Waterfowl Physical Factors" sections) as well as via the relevant disease page or pages. Within the information on the susceptible species direct links take the user to the individual page for each species. Three of the flowcharts were constructed specifically for this module, together with 22 technique Overview pages and 60 individual techniques. Information provided within these sections is provided first in general terms (e.g. principles of enclosure design for birds) followed by waterfowl specific information. The "Bird Husbandry and Management" flowchart provides links to overview pages on all aspects of bird husbandry, from identification and handling through accommodation, feeding, incubation and rearing to preventative medicine, reproductive management and population control. Information in each page follows logically from general principles to waterfowl-specific information. Individual techniques such as the use of flight netting or incubator fumigation are listed below the flowchart as well as being linked from appropriate sections of the overview pages. The "Disease Investigation and Control" flowchart is designed to assist veterinary personnel and managers in making decisions at all stages from investigating a disease outbreak on a single ill animal through to details of nursing, anaesthesia and surgery of an individual on the one hand and at the other end of the scale management of populations and their environments to control disease. Information in each page follows logically from general principles to waterfowl-specific information. Individual techniques such as methods of anaesthesia, surgical procedures and hazing/dispersal techniques fumigation are listed below the flowchart as well as being linked from appropriate sections of the overview pages. The "Industries Managing Wetlands for Wildlife" section is designed to demonstrate how man-made or human-engineered landscapes may be managed for the benefit of wildlife, particularly waterfowl. This section draws heavily on the advice provided in the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust publication "Waterfowl, Wetlands and Industry" which is also provided in full within the WILDProElectronic Library. Individual techniques described include reed bed construction, pond construction and planting of waterbodies with marginal vegetation. Other documents within the WILDPro Electronic library relevant for this module include the "Field Manual of Wildlife Diseases".
