The WSPA works to alleviate animals' suffering using a combined and collaborative approach encompassing hands-on work, educational initiatives, lobbying and awareness campaigns. Areas of work include stray animal control, humane education, disaster relief, farm animals, and commercial exploitation of wildlife. The WSPA is also working for a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW), aiming to achieve global consideration of the welfare of sentient animals and recognition of animal welfare as an issue of importance within the social development of nations worldwide.
