  • Fishing tackle may cause injury to waterfowl in a variety of ways. Externally, Hooks may catch and tear on skin, line may become wrapped around any part of the body and cause constriction. Additionally, birds may become entangled in line and trapped attached to solid objects either above or below the water surface.
  • If ingested, hooks, line, floats and lures may catch e.g. in the mouth, in the oesophagus or further down the digestive tract and cause physical damage to internal body tissue (e.g. penetration, laceration, and Pressure necrosis).
  • N.B. lead weights if ingested may cause lead poisoning (Lead Poisoning).
