Wildlife Information Network developed this Wildpro volume to help animal health professionals, farmers, wildlife managers and government officials tackle one of the most infectious diseases of livestock. Key areas revised for this 2007 edition include diagnostic techniques, vaccine developments, changes in OIE and EU regulations, and additions to the Electronic Library.

The volume runs from a central flowchart divided into sections.

Foot-and-Mouth Disease includes information on incubation, time course and persistence of disease, morbidity, mortality, life stage affected and susceptibility, clinical signs, diagnostic criteria, medical treatment and nursing, vaccination and prophylactic treatment, environmental and population level control measures.

Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus includes data on virus structure and identification, host species, degree of hazard to humans and other species, life cycle and transmission, physical and chemical inactivation of the virus, environments and geographical distribution of the virus.

The Disease Management section contains a series of pages including:
Control Options for Stopping the FMD Virus Spreading: a review of policy choices for FMD-free areas, and factors to be considered in choosing disease control options in the event of an outbreak.
Costs and Consequences of FMD and its Control: qualitative impacts of the disease and control measures on the individual animal, the farmer, related trades and professions, consumers of meat and other animal products, the environment, the FMD-affected region of a country and the affected country as a whole.

The other management pages consider Import and Travel Restrictions, National Contingency Plans, Diagnosis, Surveillance and Carriers, Culling and Carcass Disposal, Vaccination, and information pertinent to zoos, wild animals and companion animals which may be affected by FMD and its control.

In the Vaccination section, information is provided on vaccine development, vaccine regimes and different techniques for using vaccination (e.g. barrier vaccination, emergency mass vaccination).

The Electronic Library has been updated, adding important texts from the OIE, EU, and UK, indicating lessons learned from the 2001 outbreak, and showing changes in policy, as well as providing diagnostic and biosecurity advice.

Frequently Asked Questions provides questions with particular reference to the UK, brief answers, and links to further information.
