What is Wildpro?

Electronic Encyclopaedia

The Wildpro® Electronic Encyclopaedia is designed as a one-stop source of information on the health and management of captive and free-living wild animals, and emerging infectious diseases. Because of the huge breadth of the encyclopaedia, and the depth of the information contained within it, Wildpro® is being developed in a series of volumes, each of which can be used separately (provided on CD-ROM) or as a part of the whole encyclopaedia (available on the website).

Individual Wildpro® volumes are based on a species or group of species (e.g. Hedgehogs: Health and Management, Waterfowl: Health and Management), a disease (e.g. Foot-and-Mouth Disease, West Nile Virus), or a group of techniques (e.g. Wildlife: First Aid and Care, Wildlife: Disease Investigation and Management (Birds)).

All data within the Wildpro® Encyclopaedia are fully referenced, and volumes and pages are refereed by experts within the relevant fields. Hyperlinks are used to indicate where further information may be found and wherever two pieces of information are logically associated with one another. A large Glossary provides definitions of specialist vocabulary. A taxonomic tree provides information on all of the Living Kingdoms, to various levels of detail: for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, at least to a list of genera in a given family.

Electronic Library

The Wildpro® Electronic Library contains more than 200 documents ranging in size from single page factsheets or pamphlets to whole books such as the classic 1910 text "Elephants and Their Diseases" (G.H. Evans), the "Field Manual of Wildlife Diseases" (National Wildlife Health Center, USGS) and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's "Wetlands, Wildlife and Industry: a manual of principles and practice." Some are provided in Portable Document Format (.pdf files), others as web pages (some are presented in both formats).

This library is a huge resource for anyone with an interest in wildlife health and management or emerging infectious diseases. It brings together a wealth of information from a wide variety of sources. The documents are directly linked from the main Wildpro® Encyclopaedia where relevant.

Many of these documents are hard to find. While some are available elsewhere on the Web, others are not available in an electronic format except in this Library, and some are also out of print. By granting permission for us to reproduce them in the Wildpro® Library, the copyright holders have increased the accessibility of these documents.

Each document has been made available within the Wildpro® Library by kind permission of the copyright holder, in which case copyright remains with the originator, or is in the public domain.
